Obcession movie reriew
First time I've ever seen this many people fill almost half a cinema for this kind of movie.
A Few Words About the Story
A young man has an intense crush on a girl he works with at a music store. At some point, he makes the mistake of going into a strange shop and buying a special "wishing stick" . The girl he liked—within minutes—lost her original personality and transformed into an extremely obsessive young woman, fiercely devoted to her boyfriend. This love developed into an overwhelmingly consuming passion that eventually became possessive to the point where he became its prisoner, terrifying all their friends in the process .
The Horror Experience
As a theme, this was a very difficult film to watch. Although I'm not a fan of horror movies, and although I've seen quite a few films in this genre over a long period—none of the horror movies I've watched were as brutal as this one.
The film had very intense shifts between scenes—where one moment everything was calm, the next it suddenly turned completely upside down, as if the devil had entered her. In psychological terms, you could call this a split personality .
Through this film, I also noticed intense self-parody in the characters—as well as references and nods to other films in the genre, mainly Scary Movie. Even the two Slayer song videos with the machete looked like innocent child's play compared to this!
What the Critics and Audiences Are Saying
This is the horror movie audiences have been asking for for years. Unrelenting, brutal, so original, so genuinely unsettling and creepy that at times you start laughing because your body doesn't even know how to regulate it .
Inde Navarrette's performance as Nikki has been called "one of the year's standout horror performances" . She "switches between warmth and instability with startling ease" and "carries so much of what makes the film work" .
The film's budget was only $750,000, yet it has already grossed over $80 million worldwide—a profit of over 10,000% . It's currently the highest-rated horror film of 2026 on Rotten Tomatoes .
My Thoughts
I was also impressed by how this film, with such a small budget, managed to surpass almost $200 million . Inside the theater, there were also a few people laughing at the insane disguises the girl would put on. That's probably one of the reasons the film has been praised.
But for me? The violence was too much. The psychological torture was relentless. And the ending—where Bear realizes the only way to break the curse is to die, and takes a fatal overdose, only for the wish to finally break after his death—left me with nothing but emptiness .
Rating: 2/10
Technically good . Emotionally brutal. Not my kind of horror.
