Sense and Sensibility (2026)
The 2026 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility has critics mostly in agreement: it's a solid, well-crafted film that never quite escapes the shadow of the 1995 version.
The Good
Daisy Edgar-Jones (Elinor) and Esmé Creed-Miles (Marianne) have received strong praise. One critic called Edgar-Jones' performance her best since Normal People. Creed-Miles is described as "wild, vivacious and gloriously unguarded." George MacKay's Edward strikes the right balance of awkward tenderness. Fiona Shaw's Mrs. Jennings brings welcome comic relief.
The film's visuals have also been praised — shot on 35mm, with a naturalistic, earthy look that makes the period feel real. The sisterly bond between Elinor and Marianne is widely considered the film's emotional heart.
The Bad
The biggest complaint is that it never escapes the 1995 Ang Lee version. One critic wrote they kept "thinking back fondly to the actors who filled those roles for Lee."
There's also a shortage of humour. Austen's wit is largely missing, replaced by a more serious, sedate tone. At over two hours, the pacing drags, especially in the second half.
«Critics keep comparing this adaptation to the 1995 film — but they forget it's based on Austen's novel, not on Ang Lee's movie. A new adaptation has every right to be different.»
Personal view
My personal view , seen the story with Hugh Grant in Netflix a few years ago with neatly the same feelings though the similarity level was 90% with the todays seen in cinema. I can also disagree with the lighting . it is evry poor in especially in the first part. I ont know if it was the mistake of the guy using the projector or from the production
I know no actor from the todays movie but their acting is very good if not highly emotional . Many times there were laughter’s in the hall
The Verdict
A respectable, beautifully acted adaptation that plays it safe. It captures the emotion but lacks the spark of the original.
